Baby chicks are here at Wells Brothers. I tried all kinds of ways to link chickens and Christmas together. I just couldn’t come up with anything snazzy that went with “Chicken Christmas”. So here you go. The reasons for all this fowl information over the last several newsletters is because Wells Brothers is scratching its way into the live chick market. As the saying goes “the chicks in the mail” and should be here by December 17. Hopefully, you will be able to wing by and see our chicken nuggets with all the supporting materials you need to set up your very own backyard flock. Not sure how to raise chickens? Find out the basics here.
This is our first “peck” into urban livestock this century. We paid extra to have their sex verified so all we have are (I hope) all hens.
For a white egg layer, we have the “White Leghorns 236”. This is a very prolific egg producer that weighs around 4.5 pounds.
We have two types of brown egg layers the “Black Australorps” is a popular large egg layer that is well suited for our hot summers and is in the 5.5-pound range. Our last entry in the large brown egg layer class is the time proven “Barred Plymouth Rock” aka the “Barred Rock”. These hens hit the scales about 6 pounds. These 3 breeds produce sturdy chickens that have a pleasant disposition and lay lots of eggs. While you’re here picking out baby chicks, pick up a bag or two of Purina Layena Chicken Feed. It just so happens to be on-sale the month of December.
I will tell you that getting baby chicks delivered is not like ordering a pizza. You get what is available or you get on a list. I timed it right and got the majority of what I was looking for. The other breeds I have been looking at will not be available until sometime in 2017. I will keep you posted.
