The time line to apply fall pre-emergent herbicide is the beginning of September through mid to late October. Remember that seeds are not concerned with what month it is. Three criteria must be met for seeds to germinate: correct moisture, correct temperature and a good location (soil). When these conditions are met the seed will sprout.
On the synthetic side we carry Dimension and Portrait. Dimension targets the grassy weed like the annual bluegrass. Dimension can be applied every 4 to 6 weeks. Portrait zeros in on the broad leafs like henbit and is applied once a season.
On the all-natural side is corn gluten meal. It is available in powder and granulated. The powder is a mess to spread but works faster. With granulated you don’t get the mess but it takes longer to work.
Most folks also apply fertilizer this time of year. Some of the all-natural fertilizers we offer include Texas Tea, LadyBug, 7-2-2 and 6-2-2 Garden-Ville. Our flagship fertilizer, Dirt Diet is a 4-1-2 in a 50# for $27.95. Application rates will range from 10# to 20# per 1000 square feet.
Synthetic fertilizers include our own 16-20-0 and 28-6-6. We also carry 21-0-0, 13-13-13 and the superb Neil Sperry’s 24-0-0 and 24-6-12. Rounding out the mix is a good selection of Ferti-Lome and Hy-Yeild products. No matter what product you favor, follow the label directions and know the square footage of your lawn.
