This year we have been inundated with calls to purchase St. Augustine grass seed. Wells Brothers does not carry nor can we get St. Augustine grass seed. The fact is that there is very little St. Augustine seed available. The three main reasons are it’s hard to harvest, hard to germinate, and the seed quality (germination rate) tends to be very poor. That’s why folks plant sod. From Texas A&M “Ecological Turf Tips SCS-2009-06” – “Seeded types are typically not available as sod. Most improved Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass, and St. Augustine grass do not produce viable seed and are only available as sod, plugs, or sprigs”
So if you are looking for St. Augustine grass, call the folks at A1 Grass in Plano.
